A lifelong love for Sardinia, the vocation to share this and the joy of living in Sardinia brought the Sacred Sardinia project into being. The project aims to introduce people to the ancient sacred sites of Sardinia through an experiential approach. This approach brings together archaeological research, modern science and technology, and personal awareness to explore a profound sense of the sacred and to discover the timeless messages that these ancient sites still transmit today. The project carries out this aim through excursions, tours, conferences, research and study as well as meditations in nature and the development of original ideas
The experiential approach engages participants in the exploration of their feelings, mental images and thoughts, sharing these with others in the group. Each person is invited to be fully involved and freely expressive.
Why Sacred Sardinia?
Sardinia is a wonderful place. There is a unique and perfect harmony between the ancient monuments – the nuraghi, the sacred wells, the tombs – and their natural surroundings. The timeless beauty of Sardinia moves us, welcomes us and gives us something essential. This beauty contains a sense of the sacred that merits respect, protection and acknowledgment.
Humankind has always recognised special, sacred, places where worlds meet and intermingle, where the human and the “divine” enter into contact. In Sardinia one can visit places which have been venerated since ancient times. The definition of sacred is both cultural and subjective. Every person can find their own sense of the sacred in Sardinia: it could be the sea, the mountains, the forests, the ancient sites, the churches, the festivals, the people.
We can aim to deeply understand and experience that which surrounds us, not just as detached spectators or tourists. If we put our attention and awareness towards encountering, feeling, understanding, loving our environment then that environment engages us, it becomes a protagonist in our understanding and experience. Why not do this in Sardinia?
Sardegna Sacra (Sacred Sardinia) is a project created by Ilaria Montis, archaeologist, state registered tourist guide and certified Mindfulness teacher (MBSR; CISM)
